Self-driving cars, surgical robots, and industrial databases are immensely complex software systems.  It is unreasonable to expect a programmer to be able to account for and accurately handle all possible scenarios that such a system may encounter. My research studies a simple principle—allow a computer system to conduct limited “experiments” and augment its behavior based on the outcomes.
